Herk: Hero of the Skies, by Joseph Earl Dabney
![]() |
(from the back cover) Still in use and in production, the C-130 Hercules has served since 1956, seeing extensive action in the Vietnam War. Tagged a "trash Hauler" and the "green garbage can" by servicemen, this aircraft has a history of airlift missions not previously told in other accounts written about this plane. Here, Sam McGowan focuses on actual missions, and drawing from personal experiences, tells the plane's fascinating tale...The C-130 has enjoyed the longest production run of any airplane built. Until now, however, the story of the airlift mission for which the plane was designed has never been told. This is the book that tells the story. | ![]() |
| Scott's Comments: Dabney's book is a must have book in my opinion for the C-130 lover. It provides a great background on the development of the C-130 and the innovations it brought to the aviation world when it was first produced. Obviously, it has been one of the most enduring designs in aircraft history and Dabney does a great job of singing her praises. There is plenty of early achievements and history of the Hercules in operation including foreign operators. Dabney tells the stories of the famous aircraft carrier landings, the Fulton recovery system tests, and the Four Horsemen demonstration team, to name just a few. |
